Panama Economy and Politics

Throughout the 20th century, the country of Panama had a constitutional democracy. But in 1968 a group of rioters gave military power. By the 1980s, Panamanian General Manuel Noriega got in control of the government. In economical and diplomatic pressure was unsuccessful in bringing down Noriega, George Bush, former U.S. president, had American troops get rid of the dictator and bring back the democracy using the government operation "Just Cause" during around 1991.

Unlike America, Panama is a constitutional representative democracy. The set up is like the United Stated government, meaning the government is divided into the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Something that is unique to me is that the president is elected for a 5-year term. President also selects the national cabinet. Two elected vice-presidents serve 5-year terms as well. The legislative branch has only 1 chamber legislature, unlike the U.S. being made of the House of Representatives and the Senate. It holds 71 members who are elected for 5-year terms. In the States, four hundred thirty-five members of the house are elected every two years. The Judicial Branch has two member of each of the United States and runs for six years. The Judicial Branch in Panama consists contains a supreme court, five superior courts and three courts of appeal.

The Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) has the largest portion of Panama. The PRD favors the young and urban poor of the country based on the economy matters. The Arnulfista Party (PA) is based among Panama's rural population and is the nation's current president. The Popular Block party is a combustion of former Christian Democrats and pro-business groups such as the National Liberal Republican Movement and Democratic Change. Those type of parties lean towards the wealthy and business owners of the country.
